We use regional variation in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (2009-2012) to analyze the effect of government spending on consumer spending. Our consumption data come from household-level retail purchases in Nielsen and auto purchases from Equifax credit balances. We estimate that a $1 increase in county-level government spending increases consumer spending by $0.18. We translate the regional consumption responses to an aggregate fiscal multiplier using a multi-region, New Keynesian model with heterogeneous agents and incomplete markets. Our model successfully generates the estimated positive local multiplier, a result that distinguishes our incomplete markets model from models with complete markets. The aggregate consumption multiplier is 0.4, which implies an output multiplier higher than one. The aggregate consumption multiplier is almost twice the local estimate because trade linkages propagate government spending across regions. This paper analyzes the effects of the lower bound for interest rates on the distributions of expectations for future inflation and interest rates.

India has the highest retail prices of petrol and diesel among South Asian nations as taxes account for half of the pump rates. Pulp and paper must not be mixed up with the wood sector as the latter depends more on demand from construction. The downstream sector of pulp and paper has more weight. That is why world paper output increased 0.8% y/y to 410 million tons in 2017. Asia accounts for the bulk of the market with near half global output (and consumption) of paper and board. The paper sector which has been under severe pressure from electronic media may have entered 2018 on better conditions after significant capacity withdrawals continued throughout the industry in recent years. More specifically in North America, the US paper market is benefiting from a positive impact from USD weakness on industry trade, and also from higher import duties for imports from Canada. Pulp prices as much as downstream corrugated paperboard ones have been rising again for two years as a result, and led to margin expansion across the sector. However, it shall be insured that contractions in paper output brought on by digitalization do not outstrip the rise in demand caused by ever more e-commerce packaging provided plastics does not stand in for paper.

At the height of its distribution heyday – 2001 precisely – the USPS handled and delivered nearly 104 billion first-class letters. Just 12 years later, that number plunged by nearly 50% – to 66 billion. All types of paper mail, from letters and packages to fliers and catalogs, have dropped from 177 billion pieces just four years ago to 150 billion. (The separate corrugated markets take credit for the only bright spot during that period, in which the number of packages actually to the USPS, the Boston Consulting Group identified key drivers killing the single biggest “product” of the post office. They include the green movement (sustainability), ever-rising fuel costs, and rapid transition to online (Internet and mobile) communications and electronic invoicing/payments. One leading telecommunications company told the company it was on track to completely eliminate first-class paper-based communications and billings in just the next six short years, and expects its competitors to follow suit. Tom Runiewicz, Principal, Industry Practices Group, IHS, oversees the huge company’s U. energy service, keeping an eagle eye on key metrics (like revenues and volumes) of more than 140 different industries. “It’s not that the USPS is bad, but the volume of materials going through the postal service has the largest shrinkage of any industry we look at in the U. That in and of itself says, if they’re the largest mover of communication paper, it really shows how much communication paper has declined.” Besides the USPS, there are many now struggling industries that have long relied on paper as their economic engine. Many are now virtual commodities on the Web and continue to be challenged by ways to retain the same tangible value of their former paper-based selves. (Even major check-printing companies expect annual production drops of as much as 7% a year through 2020, according to the Boston Consulting Group report.) Over the past seven years, scores of U. newspapers, many over a century old, no longer exist in print. Last year, that number dropped to its lowest level since the Direct Marketing Association tracked such data, according to a recent “Newsprint is dying on the demand side,” says Runiewicz at IHS.

As finance chief of Netflix, David Wells can occasionally be counted on to sound a note of fiscal discipline at a company where CEO Reed Hastings is unafraid to bet big. “If you have the numbers of people watching it, we certainly can support that level of quality in terms of TV.” There was a time not too long ago when the suggestion of forking over that much money for 60 minutes of scripted content might have gotten Wells laughed out of the room. But even as he preaches managing the margins at a Goldman Sachs investor conference earlier this month, Wells echoes his boss’s bullish projection for what Netflix could be spending on an episode five years from now. But now $20 million seems the logical extension of where Netflix and its many competitors are headed; HBO isn’t that far away with its budget-busting hit “Game of Thrones,” which will see the price of its final episodes run $15 million apiece. At a moment when the television industry is grappling with a massive increase in the number of shows being produced, the ripple effects of Peak TV are surfacing in virtually every line item in a typical TV series budget. Fueled by the rise of streaming heavyweights that don’t play by the same financial rules as traditional TV players, costs are soaring for everything from location scouting to renting equipment to securing post-production facilities. A wide range of services takes longer to secure and costs more even when it’s in hand — particularly transportation-related expenses. These kinds of increases are exacerbated by a sense of panic that has set in for more than a dozen executives steering networks and studios, many of whom requested anonymity in exchange for discussing sensitive financial figures with Variety for this story. The estimates on the cost of content that emerged from these interviews peg the typical range of the production budget for high-end cable and streaming dramas at $5 million-$7 million an hour, while single-camera half hours on broadcast and cable run from $1.5 million to more than $3 million. With the exception of HBO, which made its mark with lavish productions, that’s a significant increase, during just the past five years, over what had been $3 million-$4 million for cable dramas and around $1 million-$1.5 million for single-camera half hours.

What is the problem we wish to solve when we try to construct a rational economic order? On certain familiar assumptions the answer is simple enough. If we possess all the relevant information, if we can start out from a given system of preferences, and if we command complete knowledge of available means, the problem which remains is purely one of logic. That is, the answer to the question of what is the best use of the available means is implicit in our assumptions. The conditions which the solution of this optimum problem must satisfy have been fully worked out and can be stated best in mathematical form: put at their briefest, they are that the marginal rates of substitution between any two commodities or factors must be the same in all their different uses.

As post-boom Ireland embraces the low prices of German giants Aldi and Lidl, Derek Scallyin Berlin examines how the chains sold the idea that 'stinginess is super' to an initially sceptical German middle class IT'S ONE THING for a company to enter a market but quite another to enter a language. Three years ago, German discount retailer Aldi made the official transition from grocery chain to social phenomenon. After opening its first stores in Switzerland, the term "Aldification" formally entered the German language when it was named Swiss word of the year. No one is sure who came up with the term or when exactly it took hold in the retailer's home market of Germany. But the term has come to explain the most dramatic stage yet in the evolution of the business established in 1946 by brothers Theo and Karl Albrecht. After opening a series of stores in the western city of Essen, they embraced their now trademark low-cost, no-frills approach in 1950. The Aldi brand comprises two separate companies, Aldi-Nord serving northern Germany and its eastern neighbours, and Aldi-Süd serving southern Germany and western European countries including Ireland. The two companies co-operate closely and operate a total of 4,100 branches in Germany and 2,700 abroad.
