However, by implementing some specific management strategies, you can cultivate an environment in which the majority of your students understand and respect your rules. Perhaps the most significant stride you can take to cultivating an environment in which your students behave themselves is to show them adequate respect. For example, use students' names when speaking to them. Additionally, always listen attentively when students speak, and never interrupt. Also, if you need to speak with a student about a problem, speak calmly and in private. Return graded assignments promptly, and offer students second chances to redo assignments or take quizzes to improve their grades. If a procedure isn’t followed, the teacher provides more practice. Lessons are highly interactive, and students remain engaged in meaningful activities. And yes, no matter where we go, the students all act the same in the classrooms of less effective teachers. Let’s take a look inside of less effective teachers’ classrooms first. ◆ There are lots of teacher warnings directed at misbehaving students. The teacher generally stays toward the front of the room. ◆ Consequences for behavior infractions are inconsistent. A place for everything and everything in its place. ◆ The students do most of the talking and the doing, prompted by the teacher ’s questioning and guidance. ◆ The punishment for any given infraction is consistent (and rare). Even in the case of misbehavior, the problem is handled seriously but calmly. ◆ Activities are varied to meet the needs of all learners. You now have a blueprint for what an effective teacher ’s classroom looks like. For an organized teacher is a happier one than one who has let things come undone. The severity of the punishment is usually in direct proportion to the teacher ’s anxiety level. ◆ The lessons are usually “one size fits all.” Unfortunately, most fit none. ◆ Technology is used, thoughtfully, to enhance lessons and learning.
