Sixteen final-year students will present their research findings, relating to projects that will be submitted towards the end of April. The event is open to students, staff and others who are interested in finding out about the work done by History students at Northumbria University. Following on from the student presentations, Dr Sasha Handley from the University of Manchester will give a keynote lecture. Dr Handley is a specialist in the cultural and social history of the early modern period. Her talk is entitled ‘Voices from the Margins: Ghost Stories in Early Modern England’, and she will also outline her own research trajectory as part of the lecture. During the social part of the conference, a jury comprised of Northumbria academics will also announced awards for the papers that were deemed to be of the highest quality in each of the two conference strands. The event is coordinated by Dr Daniel Laqua, Programme Leader for the BA History.

By the time you come to start work on a dissertation, you will probably have sampled various different periods and approaches to history as part of your degree, and you should have a good idea about what things interest you – or more likely, what things. Our course covers a wide spectrum of art and architecture, from the medieval to modern and contemporary periods. The aim is to foster a wide and deep understanding of art and architecture, and to help you develop visual literacy and awareness, as well as a range of critical and analytical skills. There’s no substitute for looking at the real objects and we take full advantage of Cambridge’s outstanding resources, including the Fitzwilliam Museum and its picture conservation department, Kettle’s Yard and the Colleges’ art collections. The Department’s comprehensive library houses a rich collection of books, and you have access to the University Library and the Fitzwilliam Museum’s reference library (among others) as well. During vacations, travel is encouraged and College financial support is usually available (see individual College websites for details); we also organise study outings. We advise that you visit museums, exhibitions and buildings, such as churches or country houses, and take descriptive notes or sketches of what you see.
