Seminar Objectives This workshop aims to help students doing research and writing their master thesis around marketing strategy cases. Each student needs to choose a company restrictions apply that has faced an interesting marketing problem and will develop all his work around this company. This thesis presents the product of the research into the comparative marketing strategies ofcompeting American, British and Japanese companies in the UK market. These companieswere drawn from the audio/hi-fl, ball bearing, machine tools, microwave ovens andphotocopier industries. The aims of the research were:i) to investigate and compare a matched sample of subsidiaries of the threenational parent companies to discover whether there were significantdifferences in the way that these subsidiaries went about their business ofmarketing;ii) to identify which marketing applications, supported by behavioural andorganisational differences, contributed to the achievement of effectivemarketing strategies;iii) to examine headquarters-subsidiary relationships regarding the extent ofoverseas headquarter's support for its UK subsidiary's marketing operations;andiv) to discover whether there were any pointers to change which would bebeneficial in the marketing organisation or operations of UK firms seeking toimprove their marketing strategies and performances in these industries. Suitable hypotheses indicated by possible gaps in the literature review were preparedfor investigation and testing in order to achieve these aims. The literature reviewdiscussed in this thesis also highlighted the difficulties faced by UK firms and thechallenges posed by overseas companies in the changed international businessconditions from the 1980s to 1991.
