Journals referred to by websites and blogs There are a number of websites and blogs which are dedicated to bringing scientific research to a wider audience. Examples of these are: Research Blogging ( collects together many of the blogs that use research as a basis of their blog posts. This is a good place to start to look for blogs on different topics. These blogs will usually include, at the end of the post, a link to the research paper that they have been writing about. An example: Article from: 4 July 2010) At the bottom of the article are links to the media stories AND the research paper. If you click on the science link then you will be taken to the abstract of the research paper as shown below. (4.7.10) Reading through the abstract will allow you to see if the paper looks useful/interesting. However, if you click on Full Text (PDF) you will be asked to pay for a copy. However, there is also an email address of the corresponding author. You might like to explain that you have read the abstract and would like to read the full paper, but don’t have access to it. More often than not, the corresponding author will be able to send you a pdf of the paper (and will probably be willing to answer questions you have about the paper once you have read it).

Imagine you have twenty seconds to explain the project you have been working on for months or years to another scientist who is not familiar with your area of research. You would probably try and tell them the one or two main outcomes without going into excessive technical detail. This is a good way to think about writing your abstract! The abstract is only short, but that doesn't mean that you have to cram as much detail into it as possible. Most often the first sentence contains the crucial information about the story and then the details follow after that. What you want is to grab the reader's attention with the first statement, add a few of the most important details, then leave them with the overall message of the manuscript in the last sentence. This is a good model for your abstract; after all, what you're writing is news for the scientific community. Electronic search engines and indexing services will often only search abstracts when performing word-based searches, and the abstract is frequently the first thing that is displayed when your manuscript appears in searches. From this point of view, you should make sure that there are several keywords in the abstract as well as the title (see our earlier "Titles" section for more about keywords) to give your manuscript the best chance of being found by a search.

The scientific and medical communities proclaim the costly outcomes of nicotine addiction while the tobacco industry claims that nicotine is a relatively innocuous product. How to Write an Abstract The first sentence of an abstract should clearly introduce the topic of the paper so that readers can relate it to other work they are familiar with. However, an analysis of abstracts across a range of fields show that few follow this advice, nor do they take the opportunity to summarize previous work in their second sentence. A central issue is the lack of structure in standard advice on abstract writing, so most authors don’t realize the third sentence should point out the deficiencies of this existing research. To solve this problem, we describe a technique that structures the entire abstract around a set of six sentences, each of which has a specific role, so that by the end of the first four sentences you have introduced the idea fully. This structure then allows you to use the fifth sentence to elaborate a little on the research, explain how it works, and talk about the various ways that you have applied it, for example to teach generations of new graduate students how to write clearly.

In broad terms Journal of Customer Behaviour seeks to attract three main kinds of ‘academic’ paper classified as Conceptual, Secondary and Empirical. These papers will be subject to rigorous double blind peer review. The distinguishing features of these three categories are as follows: The format of all three kinds of paper will be very similar albeit that the emphasis given to the component parts will vary considerably. In essence, an academic paper will comprise five major elements: Clearly, while the structure proposed may be applied to all kinds of academic paper the content suggested would be appropriate only to a major piece of research. Accordingly, many of the subheadings will not be applicable and so may be ignored. More detailed information on each of the aspects of an Academic Paper are given below, and in their book, Abstracts are extremely important as they summarise the content of a longer piece of work and may often determine whether or not the reader will proceed to read the document as a whole. Abstracts, like executive summaries, usually appear at the beginning of a piece of research or other work but are also widely used as a stand-alone statement of the content and findings/conclusions of such work that will be used as the first point of reference by others undertaking secondary research into a subject or topic of interest to them. A major goal of this course is the development of effective technical writing skills. To help you become an accomplished writer, you will prepare several research papers based upon the studies completed in lab. Our research papers are not typical "lab reports." In a teaching lab a lab report might be nothing more than answers to a set of questions. Such an assignment hardly represents the kind of writing you might be doing in your eventual career. The 3 mol% yttria zirconia material exhibited a shift in the grain size/density relationship which favours densification, resulting in higher density samples with smaller grain sizes at densities below 96% of theoretical density. At higher densities, significant grain growth occurs. For the 8 mol% yttria zirconia material, the grain size / density relationship remained unchanged. Differences in the response of the two materials are attributed to the differences in the activation energy for grain growth, and in grain boundary mobility. Modulus of rupture and toughness of both microwave and conventionally sintered samples were similar. Following isothermal heating at 13000C, microwave heated samples were found to be significantly more dense than conventionally heated samples. This temperature also restricted grain growth once densification was approaching completion. Acacia terminalis showed a significant response in germination after the hot water treatment while Dillwynia floribunda did not.
