Mar 4, 2012. How can we use comp exams to identify doctoral students who are suited for dissertation work and those who aren't? The use of the term Prelim (short for preliminary examination) varies by program and may be synonymous to qualifying exam but it generally refers to an examination (usually one from a sequence) that qualifies a student to continue studies at a higher level, and/or allow the student to comprehend his/her studies and see how prepared they are for the looming examinations. It is almost a gauge on how knowledgeable one is within the chosen subject. These exams may pre-date the qualifying exam at some institutions. Although some universities combine both concepts into one exam. Depending on the institution, "prelims" may also be called "quals" or "general exams". Johns Hopkins University refers to the exam as "Doctoral Board Oral" Exam, or DBO, a change from the previous "Graduate Board Orals," or GBO, as it used to be referred. Practice in this regard varies among US Graduate School programs, and even among academic departments at the same institution. Some have a single examination or set of examinations, in which case they are typically called "Prelims." Other departments have two sets of examinations, one taken early in the student's graduate work called "Comps" because they are intended as a comprehensive survey of the student's overall preparation to undertake graduate-level work, and a later set known as "Quals" intended to assess the student's qualifications to undertake dissertation research.
Students who pass the qualifying examination are deemed capable of completing scholarly work independently and are allowed to proceed with working on a dissertation. The purpose of the Dissertation Prospectus Examination is to assess the student's preparedness to write a dissertation on the topic he or she has chosen. Additionally, the Dissertation Prospectus Examination is intended to help the student in defining the direction, scope, and organization of the dissertation. Dissertations can either be written as a book or as a portfolio of papers on a unified theme. The minimum requirement for the dissertation is an introduction and three substantial chapters or papers. Examination must be completed no later than the final week of the seventh semester of full-time graduate study (not including summer or May terms), typically the Fall Semester of the student’s fourth year. After passing the Candidacy Examination, the student will submit his or her choice of a dissertation Advisor to the Graduate Committee for approval. If the Graduate Committee approves, and the faculty member chosen as an Advisor by the student agrees as well, that faculty member will be the student’s Advisor of record (see sec.1.4 above). If the Graduate Committee does not agree with the student’s choice of Advisor, the Committee will convey this information to the student and ask the student to submit another choice of Advisor. This chapter introduces and elaborates the Representational State Transfer (REST) architectural style for distributed hypermedia systems, describing the software engineering principles guiding REST and the interaction constraints chosen to retain those principles, while contrasting them to the constraints of other architectural styles. REST is a hybrid style derived from several of the network-based architectural styles described in Chapter 3 and combined with additional constraints that define a uniform connector interface. The software architecture framework of Chapter 1 is used to define the architectural elements of REST and examine sample process, connector, and data views of prototypical architectures. The design rationale behind the Web architecture can be described by an architectural style consisting of the set of constraints applied to elements within the architecture. By examining the impact of each constraint as it is added to the evolving style, we can identify the properties induced by the Web's constraints. Additional constraints can then be applied to form a new architectural style that better reflects the desired properties of a modern Web architecture.
