View Essay - Self Insight Paper WS1 from MGT 460 at Indiana Wesleyan. Running Head Self-Insight Essay 1 Self-Insight Essay Bryan E. Cratty Diane Stothard Marian University THL-105 July 15, 2013 My. Many of the formidable social and cultural problems we face today are rooted in the sharp schism that has divided Western civilization between science and religion, where science claims invincible knowledge based on the empirical investigation of the natural world, while religion can do little more than call for faith in supernatural creeds and obedience to codes of ethics that require restraint, self-discipline, and self-sacrifice. Since religion, as traditionally understood, often rests on little more than blithe promises and pompous threats, its appeals to our allegiance seldom win assent, while the ethical ideals it advocates stand hardly a fighting chance against the constant injunction — thrust upon us by TV, radio, and signboard — to enjoy life to the hilt while we can. As a result, a vast portion of humankind today has become alienated from religion as a meaningful guide to life, left with no alternative but to plunge headlong into the secular religion of consumerism and hedonism. Too often, those in the religious camp, sensing the threat secularism poses to their own security, feel driven toward an aggressive fundamentalism in a desperate bid to salvage traditional loyalties. The quest to establish a sound basis for conduct in today's world has been made particularly difficult because one consequence of the dominance of the scientific worldview has been the banishment of values from the domain of the real.

I have another serious essay but I feel as if it is very generic and doesn't showcase my personality.

Abstract The advent of agriculture has ushered in an unprecedented increase in the human population and their domesticated animals. Farming catalyzed our transformation from primitive hunter-gatherers to sophisticated urban dwellers in just 10,000 years. Today, over 800 million hectares is committed to soil-based agriculture, or about 38% of the total landmass of the earth. It has re-arranged the landscape in favor of cultivated fields at the expense of natural ecosystems, reducing most natural areas to fragmented, semi-functional units, while completely eliminating many others. This singular invention has facilitated our growth as a species to the point now of world domination over the natural world from which we evolved. Despite the obvious advantage of not having to hunt or scavenge for our next meal, farming has led to new health hazards by creating ecotones between the natural world and our cultivated fields.

We've got it down to four words: "Do what you love." But it's not enough just to tell people that. The very idea is foreign to what most of us learn as kids. When I was a kid, it seemed as if work and fun were opposites by definition. Life had two states: some of the time adults were making you do things, and that was called work; the rest of the time you could do what you wanted, and that was called playing. Occasionally the things adults made you do were fun, just as, occasionally, playing wasn't—for example, if you fell and hurt yourself. But except for these few anomalous cases, work was pretty much defined as not-fun. School, it was implied, was tedious because it was preparation for grownup work.

My improbable path started in the mid-1960s on a southern Virginia tobacco farm where I received a strong but basic and sheltered education in an all-white grammar and high school that were legacies of Massive Resistance to desegregation. I felt distinctly apart from what was at that time a suffocating racism, a reaction that would ultimately influence my teaching, research and administrative initiatives. I left the rural south because I felt an uncommon power and freedom to do so, which I attribute largely to not having been treated “like a girl” growing up. Instead of cooking, I drove tractors and pickups, fed cows, and trailed easily along behind my father in a man’s world that I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to be in. I’ve moved pretty boldly in that world ever since, although I did encounter a few challenges within higher education administration to that easy feeling. My undergraduate degree at supportive Randolph-Macon Woman’s College led to graduate work and a career in academe at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where I’ve always balanced a love of research and teaching/mentoring with a commitment to good citizenship, through service in roles such as director of undergraduate studies, associate dean, vice provost for undergraduate affairs, and dean of the honors college. Administration suits my sense of civic responsibility, provides an outlet for my impatience with problems and inefficiencies, and involves fun work with smart people in close teams. It taught me to work more efficiently than ever and see the big picture, and it allowed me to make the university a better place for students and faculty members.
