However, slideshows can also spell disaster even for experienced presenters. The key to success is to make certain your slideshow is a visual aid and not a visual distraction. By Joseph Sommerville It’s not surprising Power Point© slideshows have become the norm for visuals in most business presentations. Slideshows are quick to produce, easy to update and effective to inject visual interest into the presentation.
PowerPoint uses slides with a horizontal or “Landscape” orientation. The software was designed as a convenient way to display graphical information that would support the speaker and supplement the presentation. Depending on the “design” skills of the speaker and audience's taste slides create different emotions from a slight annoyance to a physical sickness. But that is not the worst thing. The worst thing is that instead of improving the presentation such slides confuse the audience, distract them and finally oblige the speaker to. You can print slides, an outline, speaker notes, or handouts of your Power Point presentation. The Outline prints only the text in the slides, without images. The Notes of a presentation show the slide and the related speaker notes below it. If you choose to print Handouts, you can print several slides on one page using a variety of layouts, some with space for note-taking.

Data visualization luminary and Yale professor Edward Tufte famously suggested that Power Point would have been a presentation medium well-suited to a communist dictator. The program’s linear nature, its tendency to discourage interactivity, its inability to easily share the information it contains, and its potential to limit communication with the audience can sometimes obfuscate rather than clarify. Indeed, Microsoft’s recent web-enabled improvements to the longstanding business application suggest that change is coming to presentation tools in a business world increasingly shaped by online collaboration and increasingly powerful internet applications. Today, users have unprecedented access to data at their fingertips and powerful applications to process them in real time. We use this data for everything from understanding how to set our home thermostats to monitoring NASA satellites in outer space, and we need ways to analyze, visualize, share, and explore data to improve our decision making and way of life. This new need is driving the development of communication and presentation tools, posing a fundamental challenge to the hegemony of Power Point. The best presenters tend to show rather than tell, creating opportunities to engage and persuade. By soliciting feedback and helping listeners feel ownership of the ideas under discussion, they inspire audiences and ultimately create a bond with them. Great presentation tools should have the necessary elements to support questions and intellectual digression, to allow as little or as much data to be presented per idea to communicate effectively, and should discourage the user from accidentally or intentionally “suffocating key data and conclusions” with what Tufte describes as “Chartjunk.” From nonlinear story canvases to streaming in-presentation visualizations, new online presentation tools provide unique opportunities to do just about anything one can imagine an internet application doing.
Find and download presentation slides from NAR's Research department. A good presentation depends, at least partly, on good slide design. Surprisingly, if you want to make great presentation slides, it helps to understand a little bit about the human attention span. Picture yourself arriving at the last presentation you attended. You were probably one of many people there and could melt into the crowd. There was a phone in your pocket, a to-do list in your head, and your next meal on your mind. In the next few moments, she could completely captivate you. Despite our penchant to try and do several things at once, studies show that humans can’t actually multitask effectively. Instead, we switch our attention rapidly between tasks. In fact, research shows that “multitasking” gets in the way of productivity. MIT Neuroscientist Earl Miller explains, “People can’t multitask very well, and when people say they can, they’re deluding themselves… The brain is very good at deluding itself.” Couple that with the most popular problem in our technology-obsessed culture, the ever shrinking attention span — and it can seem difficult to connect with a crowd and make an impact. (I think.) Despite being distractible, we’re also predictable little creatures. There are several reliable ways to capture and keep our attention. When we work with presentations here at Duarte, we start with storytelling, the ultimate attention grabber.

Now it’s time to set our sights on another slide type: disorganized slides. We want to think about our slides and remember that they represent our ideas. A lack of organization makes people feel a little less confident in the message. It might feel like we sort of put it up there, and at least we got something up there to present. Just tightening things up a bit, it doesn’t take much, can really make your slides look crisp. Make your slide elements orderly and neat, and people will have more confidence in the message you are sharing through those slides. There are a couple of points you should think about when you’re trying to organize your slides.
Nov 25, 2013. Delivering effective and powerful presentations is critical to business success. It's about making an impact that influences your audience, whether you are an entrepreneur pitching investors, a small business owner pitching a product to a retailer or potential customer, a startup presenting a new initiative. For his presentation, John created 19 slides, including two he does not comment orally (the title slide at the beginning and the acknowledgments at the end) and two that communicate the presentation’s structure. For a 15-minute conference presentation, this number of slides will likely work well (about one slide per minute), but fewer or more may work, too, depending on how these slides are designed and used. A presentation is not a set of slides: It is about someone having something to say to an audience. Creating slides is therefore less important than planning the presentation, structuring it, and delivering it well. These tasks should be your priorities, so make sure you reserve enough time for them in your preparation. If you do opt to support your presentation with slides, do them right: Design them so they get a message across to your audience in a visual way. They should not be designed as a memory aid for the speaker.

Reuse a slide master from another presentation by copying and pasting it into your presentation. I’ve recently been using Google Slides for a client’s corporate presentation at a conference event. It’s been really helpful for all parties involved, being able to collaborate, update and edit all in real time. But when it came down to the event itself, the client needed an offline version of the slides running in Apple Keynote. There’s no way of exporting out Google Slides into a Keynote ready format directly, there is however a work around… Both of the methods above work for Power Point as well, so depending on your program of choice you can move between all variations using the above method. Be sure to click through to check the animations, and replace them wherever things have gone wrong. According to Anderson, presentations rise or fall on the quality of the idea, the narrative, and the passion of the speaker. In fact, it’s fairly easy to “coach out” the problems in a talk, but there’s no way to “coach in” the basic story—the presenter has to have the raw material. So if your thinking is not there yet, he advises, decline that invitation to speak. Instead, keep working until you have an idea that’s worth sharing. A little more than a year ago, on a trip to Nairobi, Kenya, some colleagues and I met a 12-year-old Masai boy named Richard Turere, who told us a fascinating story. His family raises livestock on the edge of a vast national park, and one of the biggest challenges is protecting the animals from lions—especially at night. Richard had noticed that placing lamps in a field didn’t deter lion attacks, but when he walked the field with a torch, the lions stayed away. From a young age, he’d been interested in electronics, teaching himself by, for example, taking apart his parents’ radio. He used that experience to devise a system of lights that would turn on and off in sequence—using solar panels, a car battery, and a motorcycle indicator box—and thereby create a sense of movement that he hoped would scare off the lions.
