At one end of the spectrum is the undeniable statement that the organisms on the Earth have radically altered its composition. A less limited position is that the Earth's biosphere effectively acts as if it is a self-organizing system, which works in such a way as to keep its systems in some kind of meta-equilibrium that is broadly conducive to life. The history of evolution, ecology and climate show that the exact characteristics of this equilibrium intermittently have undergone rapid changes, which are believed to have caused extinctions and felled civilizations. Biologists and earth scientists usually view the factors that stabilize the characteristics of a period as an undirected emergent property or entelechy of the system; as each individual species pursues its own self-interest, for example, their combined actions tend to have counterbalancing effects on environmental change. Opponents of this view sometimes point to examples of life's actions that actually have resulted in dramatic change rather than stable equilibrium, such as the conversion of the Earth's atmosphere from a reducing environment to an oxygen-rich one. However, proponents will point out that those atmospheric composition changes created an environment even more suitable to life. Some authorities observe the global equilibrium of abiotic and biotic components and see it as a natural harmony stemming from cooperation, more so than competition.

By examining the differences in the isotope ratios between the compounds over time, the researchers were able to trace unique combinations of an element's radioactive isotopes, keeping track of them to determine the rate at which the microbes metabolize DMSP into dimethylsulfide, and therefore get clues as to how fast it's transferred from the ocean into the atmosphere."What Harry did in this research was to devise a way to isolate and measure the sulfur isotopic composition of these two sulfur compounds," said James Farquhar, a professor in the University of Maryland's department of geology.

Dangerous misconceptions, the one I’m closest to is this Gaia Hypothesis; the misconception is, if we can only go back to nature somehow there is the sense that if we can get rid of all the civilized trappings that the world will heal itself. We’re going to be way too preoccupied with changing the positions of our cities. I think everybody has the sense that we have dented the world; we have certainly put our footprint upon it. We’re going to have to figure out how to raise standard of living in a gentle energy fashion, or as gently as we can in terms of what’s going to happen to the atmosphere. It may not be in the best particular way, but on the other hand, do you want to see the child misery, the childhood diseases? And if we don’t want to go back to that, then we’re going to have to recognize that we’re going to have a heavy footprint on this planet.
