But a new study from the University of Michigan psychologist Ethan Kross argues that that’s exactly how it makes us feel. Over two weeks, Kross and his colleagues sent text messages to eighty-two Ann Arbor residents five times per day. The researchers wanted to know a few things: how their subjects felt overall, how worried and lonely they were, how much they had used Facebook, and how often they had had direct interaction with others since the previous text message. Kross found that the more people used Facebook in the time between the two texts, the less happy they felt—and the more their overall satisfaction declined from the beginning of the study until its end. The data, he argues, shows that Facebook was making them unhappy.
No one is to blame for any of this and it's true that it's not always easy to 'pull yourself out of' feeling wretched. A chemical imbalance can (and will) absolutely affect our moods. So good sleep, nutrition and self care are not a panacea– they are critical in helping us regain emotional balance. If you are struggling with sleep, it’s really important to address it. I'm a "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" kind of guy. Knowing what I know now, I should have been receiving professional therapy and maybe even medication. I'm rarely seen outside of my house without a cowboy hat and boots that include straps, just in case I need to pull myself up. I knew how to pull myself up by my bootstraps and I knew I could do it, but... My family should have dragged me to that end, even if I refused. They thought that depression was just a bad case of discouragement. Depression is an illness that is like other illnesses. I'm always after my kids to "get over it," or "buck up." In many cases, I think that's good counsel. I wasn't looking to get better because I didn't see myself as being sick. As things got worse, my family did become more and more concerned. But because principles like that are so effective when they are appropriate, people like me, who use them, often believe that people can fix anything by themselves. I was one of those people who had never experienced depression. I was overwhelmed to the point that I stopped caring about almost everything. They did everything they could to remove every bit of stress they could from me. Oh, I had experienced bad days and sad things, but that led to discouragement, not depression. One of my brothers/business partners took on far more than his share of work and forbid anyone to approach me with anything that was negative.

Psychotherapists and counsellors often discourage their depressed patients from watching the news or reading newspapers.

I was very reluctant to write this, however, because I know that everybody is different and my “advice” may mean nothing to you. So please take everything with a grain of salt. This is a work in progress. Depression is more than simply feeling unhappy or fed up for a few days. Most people go through periods of feeling down, but when you're depressed you feel persistently sad for weeks or months, rather than just a few days. Some people think depression is trivial and not a genuine health condition. They're wrong – it is a real illness with real symptoms. Depression isn't a sign of weakness or something you can "snap out of" by "pulling yourself together". The good news is that with the right treatment and support, most people with depression can make a full recovery. Depression affects people in different ways and can cause a wide variety of symptoms. They range from lasting feelings of unhappiness and hopelessness, to losing interest in the things you used to enjoy and feeling very tearful.
Spend some time playing with a child. Buy yourself a gift. Phone a friend. Read the newspaper comics page. Do something unexpectedly nice for someone. Do something unexpectedly nice for yourself. Stuff that wouldn't usually worry you takes on huge and scary significance, what might normally be seen as minor setbacks come to be viewed as 'disasters', and a sense of foreboding may swamp your mind, making the future seem scary or bleak. Eventually, the build-up of stress tips into exhausted 'flatness' and what seems to others like indifference. We have all been trained to believe that depression is a 'disease' that happens to us. If we get depressed, all we can do is passively seek the guidance of an expert or someone who can dish out side-effect-inducing meds in the hope of 'correcting' our faulty brains.

This false perception that we are alone in our struggle makes us feel like it’s not ok to talk about our challenges — because, hey…nobody wants to bring other people down. Not only is this counterproductive (you can’t solve a problem you don’t address) — but it can also be profoundly harmful and unhealthy.
