I often get asked whether it’s a good idea to publish papers during your Ph D. I was too busy trying to finish it in 3 years and writing papers seemed like a distraction. But I feel like a bit of a fraud when I give this answer because I didn’t publish very much during my Ph D. I wanted people to use my work of course, but I only wrote one paper after I finished then put the thesis in the online repository before I turned my attention to back my job – and building this blog. On reflection, I wish I had not taken such a laissez faire attitude to publishing during my Ph D. Sure, I got my degree quickly, but the chickens are coming home to roost now that I want to get into the grant application game.

This is perhaps the most daunting step of the dissertation process, and it puts many students off doing a dissertation at all. This is a pity, as there are plenty of reasons to do a dissertation even if you don’t have to (see ‘Should I do one? Some universities allow students free rein to choose a topic, although many provide a list of prescribed titles (often with associated supervisors) from which students choose. In my first year at college, I was assigned an adviser from the physics department. He was a senior professor, not too many years from retirement. “You can ask me anything you want,” he said in our first meeting, “but don’t ask me about sex—I don’t remember it.” I finished my own thesis more than 40 years ago, so perhaps I ought to adopt a similar attitude about dissertations. Instead, I will bother you with unsolicited advice. My advice is completely unofficial: it does NOT represent department policy in any way. “Anyone can write a good dissertation,” they say, “but not everyone can finish it quickly.” Yes, but it helps if you get an early start. If you want, you can sit around thinking, “I don’t have any ideas,” “I’m embarrassed to talk with a professor,” or “I have to put all of my energy into being a TA.” Those feelings are natural, but it’s in your self-interest to ignore them. Some students say to themselves, “Now that I’ve finished my coursework, I’ll relax for a year.” Sure, you deserve a rest, but the opportunity cost of a long rest is certain to be very high.
